Hugh asks, Vox Blogoli, which is the most important race for the GOP to win this cycle.
DeVine-Gamecock says its the Steele-Cardin race for US Senate in Maryland for the seat held by the retiring Democrat Paul Sarbanes.
The importance of this race transcends the GOP battle to retain majority control of the World's Most Deliberative Body. The mere presence of an elected Black Republican among the select 100 casting pool for co-starring roles on the Drive-by Media's Sunday Shows, destroys more than one of the major pillars the World's Oldest Party has erected to justify its existence for nearly 40 years if not longer.
The Democrat Party is a grievance party.
Steele's presence in the Senate as a Republican, would show the GOP meeting the grievance.
The Dem's message to Blacks since at least 1972 is that too many white people in America are racists and/or that our institutions are structurally so, that a Black person can't be expected to succeed in the free market meritocracy and that they are so helplessly disabled from the badges of slavery that they can't be expected to adhere to moral standards of behavior. Moreover, the argument goes, the Republican Party is mostly heartless white racists determined to keep Blacks down.
This argument has been losing steam for many years but still contributes to the 80-90% vote by Blacks for Democrats in elections.
Steele, unlike Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice and Colin Powell, would be impossible to dismiss as an appointed Uncle Tom, and unlike Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Shelby Steele and many other prominent Black conservatives, could not be hidden from the public view by the 527-never was mainstream-media.
C-Span's cameras don't discriminate on the Senate floor. Steele would be elected over a Democrat in a blue state with indispensable black votes. He would be one of the Elite 100.
Without even speaking a word, he refutes the argument that the Democrat Party has advanced for years to justify its existence, i.e. to protect Blacks from whites and republicans.
Steele's presence on the Senate floor would immediately empower the majority of Blacks with conservative views to make substantive arguments for conservatism. They will have cover, if you will. They will be able to point to a Black man advancing their beliefs and to white liberals opposing those beliefs.
The Democrat Party hasn't won the white vote in decades, and without upwards of 80% or more of the black vote, they would more resemble the Greens than the Elephants.
Steele could hasten their departure to the ash heap of history with the Whigs and leave the GOP as the World's Oldest Political Party.
